About
the procedure

Your appointment

At the beginning of the consultation we will discuss yours and your baby's history so I can understand what problems you have been having and you can ask any questions you have. I will then perform an oral examination on your baby. Using a gloved finger I will look and feel inside your baby's mouth and assess whether or not there is a tongue tie. I will then tell you my findings and whether I think a division is necessary. You will then decide if you would like to go ahead or if you need more time to consider.

If a division is not completed for any reason, your appointment time will be used for feeding support.

The division is very quick and simple. I will be wearing sterile gloves and will use single use, blunt-ended, sterile scissors. I will cut the frenulum and baby will quickly be back in your arms for a feed.

We will then discuss a plan for feeding and caring for your baby post division.

Please try not to feed your baby for around 30-60mins before the appointment. This is to ensure baby will feed after the division. This is important so that I can watch a feed and give you advice on feeding post division. Feeding afterwards will also help to stop any bleeding. If baby does need a feed before, try giving half what you normally would.

I also ask that you provide a light blanket for swaddling baby during the procedure.

I will discuss all the risks and benefits in full and when you are happy with all of the information provided I will ask that you sign a consent form before I proceed.
